DENVER – The No. 5 University of Denver women’s lacrosse team had six players named to the IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region Teams, including four on the first team.
Goalkeeper Emelia Bohi, draw specialist Abby Jenkins and defenders Trinity McPherson and Sam Thacker were chosen to the First Team, while midfielder Ellie Curry and attacker Julia Gilbert were selected for the Second Team. The six total players and four first-team members were tied with No. 1 Northwestern for the most among all squads in the region.
Bohi leads all goalies in the nation with 22 wins and a 6.00 goals-against average, and the sophomore ranks fifth in the nation with a .526 save percentage. The Bethesda, Maryland, native hasn’t allowed more than nine goals in a game all season long.
Jenkins has dominated the circle for the second consecutive season as she has earned 129 draw controls in 2023, breaking her own single-season record from last year when she had 109. The junior from Richmond, Virginia, has 293 career draw controls and broke the program’s previous mark of 225 on April 1 against Villanova (held by Kiki Boone, 2012-2015).
McPherson is first on the team with 61 ground balls, which is tied for the third-most in a campaign in school history. She also ranks second with 60 draw controls and is one of four players in the nation with at least 50 ground balls and 50 draw controls. The graduate student defender from Baltimore, Maryland, is third on the Pioneers with 53 caused turnovers and has also added five goals and five assists—the first points of her career. This is her second career All-Region honor as she was named to the All-Mid-Atlantic First Team in 2021.
Thacker was a unanimous selection for the second straight season as the Big East Defensive Player of the Year award and is one of six players in the nation with at least 40 caused turnovers, 40 ground balls and 30 draw controls. The Lutherville, Maryland, native leads Denver with 53 caused turnovers, is second with 55 ground balls and is tied for third with 41 draw controls. This is Thacker’s third All-Region honor after also being named to the West/Midwest First Team last season and the Second Team in 2021.
Curry is third on the team with 31 goals and ranks fourth in scoring with 43 points. The senior from Lutherville, Maryland, has also added 12 assists, 30 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers this year.
Gilbert leads the Pioneers in scoring with 58 goals and 68 points on the year. The McLean, Virginia, native’s 58 goals are tied for the sixth-most in a season in school history. The senior was named the Big East Co-Attacker of the Year, has scored in all 22 games, ranks first with eight game-winning goals and her 18 free-position goals on the year are the most in a single season for the program.
All six players were also named to the All-Big East Conference Teams, as Bohi, Curry, Gilbert, McPherson and Thacker were named to the First Team while Jenkins was selected to the Second Team.
