“Stanford is a very good team. They’re well-coached, they’ve got a lot of top performers out there,” said Denver head coach Liza Kelly. “We knew they were capable of coming and giving us a really good game, and I think we were prepared. I know this team knows how to win in a lot of different ways.”
The game-time temperature was 36 degrees Fahrenheit and a light, wintery mix fell throughout the contest, but the weather didn’t deter Denver, which improved to 14-0 on the season and won its seventh-straight contest against Stanford dating back to 2017.
Stanford tallied the first three goals of the game before junior Sloane Kipp found twine for the Pioneers on a free-position shot with 11 seconds remaining in the quarter. That began an eight-goal run for DU that went until the Cardinal was able find the back of the cage again 26 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Lauren Black recorded two of her season-high four goals in the first half, while junior Sloane Kipp registered four of her six points in the last two quarters. Kipp recorded a career high in scoring with three goals and three assists. Senior Ellie Curry had a hat trick as well, and senior Julia Gilbert also tallied three times while adding a helper.
Graduate student Kayla DeRose and senior Sam Thacker posted an assist each, with Thacker’s being the first point of her career. Denver goalkeeper Emelia Bohi made four saves, while Stanford’s netminder Kara Rahaim finished with 13 saves.
The Pioneers led 5-3 at halftime and took an 8-3 lead entering the final frame. The teams combined for 12 markers in the fourth quarter, with Denver tallying seven of them. Freshman Ryan Dineen scored both of her goals in the final stanza.
DU caused 15 turnovers and earned 16 ground balls compared to Stanford’s nine. Thacker forced a game-high five turnovers while grabbing three ground balls and three draw controls. Denver junior Abby Jenkins registered eight draw controls in the contest.
