CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia attackman Xander Dickson has been named one of 11 Tewaaraton Award Watch List second round additions, the Tewaaraton Foundation announced on Thursday (March 30). The list includes the top players across all three divisions of NCAA lacrosse and highlights the midseason contenders for this year’s Tewaaraton Award.
Dickson becomes UVA’s fifth Tewaaraton Award candidate of the season, joining teammates Connor Shellenberger, Petey LaSalla, Cole Kastner and Payton Cormier. Shellenberger, LaSalla and Kastner were named to the Foundation’s initial Watch List on Feb. 10, while Cormier was named a first round addition on March 9.
A native of Greenwich, Connecticut, Dickson currently leads the Cavaliers with 32 goals on the year and is second in points (40). He has scored six goals in three different games this season, including UVA’s most recent win, a 15-10 decision at then-No. 1 Notre Dame last Saturday (March 25). Dickson is currently No. 3 in the nation in goals per game (4.00), good for first in the ACC. His 5.00 points-per-game average ranks 10th nationally and fifth in the conference. Dickson is currently scoring on 54.2 percent of his shots, which also leads the ACC and is fourth in the country.
The field of candidates will be narrowed to 25 men’s and 25 women’s nominees on April 18. Nominees can be players from the Watch Lists or not from the Watch Lists, effectively allowing for a third round of additions. Five finalists will be announced in early May and will be invited to the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony on June 1.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are comprised of premier college coaches and are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
“Now that teams are in the heart of their conference schedules, the competition is becoming even more intense and more players are rising to the occasion,” said Andy Phillips, President of the Tewaaraton Foundation. “These additions are players who have stepped up and have earned their way onto our 2023 Watch Lists. The Tewaaraton Foundation would like to congratulate these players on their outstanding play thus far, and we wish them and their teams the best of luck for the rest of this season.”
Dickson and the top-ranked Cavaliers (7-1, 1-0 ACC) return to action on Friday (March 11), when they host No. 4 Duke (9-1, 2-0 ACC). Opening faceoff from Klöckner Stadium is set for 5 p.m. on ESPNU.
