COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State senior goaltender Skylar Wahlund was named Big Ten Specialist of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. The award is his second of the season.
Wahlund made 17 saves in the Buckeyes’ 11-7 win over No. 6 Rutgers last Sunday at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The 2023 conference-opening win was the first for Ohio State over Rutgers since 2018 and just the fourth win over the Scarlet Knights in series history.
The Powell, Ohio native recorded a .708 save percentage on the night, holding the Scarlet Knights to their lowest scoring performance of the year. Rutgers has only been held to seven or less goals in five games in the last five seasons, including Sunday’s contest against the Buckeyes.
The win marked the team’s first conference win at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium and the team’s second ranked win of the year. The game also marked the Buckeyes’ first top-10 win of the season as the team improved to 5-4 overall this season.
Wahlund has recorded 123 saves on the year for Ohio State, earning a .530 save percentage in nine games played.
The Buckeyes will play Penn State in University Park, Pa. this Sunday, April 2. The Buckeyes and Nittany Lions faceoff at noon ET from Panzer Stadium and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
