Curry and Gilbert Earn Big East Weekly Awards

DENVER – Two Denver Pioneers women’s lacrosse players earned honors from the Big East Conference on Monday as Julia Gilbert was named Attacker of the Week and Ellie Curry was named Midfielder of the Week.
Gilbert totaled five points in Denver’s two wins against ranked opponents last week. She had a pair of goals on Wednesday in a 7-5 win over No. 21 Michigan in the team’s home opener before contributing three goals on Sunday in DU’s 8-7 victory at No. 5 Maryland, recording her third hat trick of the campaign.
The senior captain leads the Pioneers in scoring this season with 13 goals and 15 points and has tallied a team-high three game-winning goals as well. She is also first on the team with 31 shots and owns a .419 shooting percentage.
This is the McLean, Virginia, native’s four such Attacker of the Week award of her career and first of the year. She earned the honor three times last year.
Curry picks up her second consecutive Midfielder of the Week accolade after also being honored last week. Also a senior captain, she had two goals in Denver’s win at Maryland, including tallying the game-winner with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Lutherville, Maryland, native is second on the team with nine goals and 12 points (9g/3a)0. She also has six ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Georgetown’s Nicole Massimino was chosen as the Big East’s Defensive Player of the Week and Tess Osburn of Marquette was selected as the Freshman of Week.
