First-year goalkeeper Amelia Hughes has been named National Defensive Player of the Week by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) after a standout performance in Princeton’s 17-9 win at Temple on Saturday.

Hughes made 19 saves to earn her first collegiate win, keeping the Owls off the scoreboard in the first quarter and limiting them to just one goal in the fourth.

She was at her best when the Owls were at the eight-meter arc, holding Temple scoreless on seven free position chances during the game.

Through two career starts, Hughes is averaging 15.0 saves-per-game which ranks No. 1 in the nation.

Hughes and her teammates will take on two Top-25 opponents this week, venturing on the road to take on No. 14 Rutgers (March 1; 6 p.m.) and No. 22 Yale (March 4; 1 p.m.)
