The flowers aren’t blooming, there is still snow on the ground, but the sun is shining and the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams have kicked off the 2023 spring with opening day victories. Freshman Samantha Bennett had a hat-trick in her first collegiate game in a win over UNH. Colin McGill had six points, leading the men’s squad to a one goal victory over Merrimack.

Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.

Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes – one male, one female – as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.

Colin McGill, So., Devon, Pa., A, Men’s Lacrosse

Colin McGill posted a game-high six points on Saturday to help the Dartmouth men’s lacrosse team beat Merrimack in dramatic fashion, 11-10. He finished with four goals and two assists, including the game-winning goal with 3:02 remaining, just 21 seconds after Merrimack pulled even at 10. Five of McGill’s points came in the game’s first 20:06 as he had a hand in five of Dartmouth’s first six goals of the season, which proved critical to the victory. The hat trick was the fifth of McGill’s career as the Big Green beat the previously 3-0 Warriors, who were one of just three teams in the nation at 3-0 entering the day.

Samantha Bennett, Fr., Providence, R.I., A, Women’s Lacrosse

Freshman Samantha Bennett scored three goals and had one assist in her collegiate debut to help lead the Big Green to a 13-12 season-opening victory over in-state rival New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at Scully-Fahey Field. Bennett made it 3-0 with just over four minutes to go in the first quarter for her first collegiate goal. The Providence, Rhode Island native scored twice, unassisted, in the third frame for the hat-trick.
