Senior attacker Julia Gilbert tallied three times for her first hat trick of the season, and fellow team captain Ellie Curry also had a multi-goal performance by finding the back of the net twice as well. Lauren Black, Mollie Estepp, Sloane Kipp and Raegan Wilson also found the cage.
Sophomore goalkeeper Emelia Bohi made a career-high 11 saves, including stopping seven shots in the first quarter.
Five different goal scorers tallied DU’s first six markers, with Curry opening the scoring just 6:35 after the first draw.
The Pioneers led 3-0 after the first quarter, and while the Buffaloes scored back-to-back markers early in the second frame, DU closed the half with three more goals and led 6-3 at the break.
Denver opened the second half with its seventh goal of the afternoon just nine seconds in, as Wilson gained control of the draw, took it down the field and buried her shot on the rush. It was one of a game-high six draw controls for Wilson in the game.
DU added two more markers in the frame, which provided vital as CU tallied three times in the fourth quarter. The Buffs’ Charlie Rudy scored her fourth goal and sixth point with 1:25 remaining to make it a one-goal game, but that was as close as Colorado got to evening the score.
The Pios finished with a 13-8 advantage in draw controls, with Trinity McPherson and Abby Jenkins both winning three apiece.
UP NEXT: The Pioneers conclude their season-opening four-game swing next Saturday as they travel to Columbus to face the Ohio State Buckeyes at 11 a.m. MT.
