DENVER – The No. 9 Denver Pioneers women’s lacrosse team begins its 2023 campaign this weekend on the road against Louisville and Vanderbilt.
DU opens the season on Friday at Louisville before wrapping up the two-game swing on Sunday at Vanderbilt. Both games begin at 11 a.m. MT.
The Pioneers are the reigning Big East Conference regular season and tournament champions after posting an 18-3 overall record and a 5-0 mark in league play. DU defeated both the Louisville and Vandy at home in 2022.
These will be the Pioneers’ first games since falling to eventual national runner-up Boston College 13-8 in the NCAA Tournament second round on May 15.
Denver is 6-3 all-time against the LU Cardinals and has won each of the last five matchups, including last year’s season opener when it earned a 19-9 victory on Feb. 13, 2022. The Pioneers are 2-2 in outings in Kentucky, with them making their first trip to the state since 2020.
DU owns a 6-4 record against Vandy, winning three of the last four meetings. The Pioneers will also be making their first trip to Nashville since 2020 and post a 3-2 record in the Music City. DU won 10-6 last season on March 6, 2022 against the Commodores at Peter Barton Stadium.
This weekend marks the first half of Denver’s four straight road contests to begin the campaign, as the Pioneers will also travel to Boulder to face in-state foe Colorado on Feb. 18 and to Columbus to play Ohio State on Feb. 25 before their first home game on March 1 versus Michigan.
