Garry is a trans-tibial (below-knee) amputee and is the founder of the Amped Riders Team. A work accident in 1997 left Garry with a severely crushed left foot that ultimately led to the trans-tib amputation in 1999. After several years of enduring intense chronic pain, things began to improve and Garry started skating again. He quickly took note of the fact that a guy with one leg riding a skateboard draws a lot of attention and used that attention to form the ARA and advocate for all amputees.
